Newgate Farm sold the second most expensive mare at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast on Tuesday with High Chaparral’s top class daughter Omei Sword fetching $1.7 million.
A lightly raced Group II winner that was second to Astern in the Group I ATC Golden Rose, Omei Sword had the race record and the pedigree being a daughter of Group I MRC Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights.
She was bought by Dean Hawthorn Bloodstock/ Freyer Bloodstock and they will be hoping for the same future success they achieved when they teamed up to buy The Broken Shore from the National Broodmare Sale in 2014 for $1.9 million. She was carrying the current triple Group I star Shoals at the time.
“We thought she would be well sought after and we’d have to stump up to get her,” Hawthorne pointed out.
“She went for a little bit higher than we thought originally but when you’re chasing these big mares you’ve got to pay because everyone wants them.
“She will go straight to stud. She will go to the Northern Hemisphere and then we’ll sit down and work out her future from there.”
Newgate Farm were also active as purchasers securing regally bred Pierro filly Notting Hill for $950,000, Group III winner Danish Twist (Dane Shadow) for $575,000 and Group III winner Ocean Embers (Beneteau) for $525,000).
