Dual Oaks winner Egg Tart was not the only filly purchased by Anton Koolman for Hermitage Thoroughbreds at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale Session Two.
He also signed for Foxwedge filly Phoenix Claws, who opened her account with an all the way win at Gosford on Tuesday.
She failed to flatter in three runs for Chris Waller last year and was subsequently transferred to David Pfieffer.
Having her second run back from a lengthy spell for her new trainer, Phoenix Claws led throughout and won the 1100 metre maiden by a length and a half.
A $100,000 purchase for Anton Koolman for Heritage Thoroughbreds from the Canning Downs Stud draft, Phoenix Claws is a half-sister to stakes-placed Princess Varunya from stakes-placed Bruges, a half-sister to Group I VRC Victoria Derby winner Amalfi.
Phoenix Claws is the 50th winner this season for Newgate Farm’s Foxwedge, who will finish as the Leading Australian Second Crop sire by earnings with over $3.5 million won by his progeny.
He has sired three Australian stakes-winners headed by Group I winner Foxplay and has also been represented by the outstanding Kiwi Group II winner Volpe Veloce.
A Group I winning son of Fastnet Rock, Foxwedge has been super popular at Newgate as we head towards the breeding season and will cover a full book at $22,000.
