Newgate Bred and Sold Foxplay Wins Phar Lap

Saturday, March 11, 2017

Quality Foxwedge filly Foxplay showed her class at Rosehill on Saturday to score a stylish victory in the Group II ATC Phar Lap Stakes to the great delight of her big team of Star Thoroughbreds owners.

A two time Group II winner in the spring, the Chris Waller trained Foxplay was cherry ripe at her third run back from a spell and surged late for Kerrin McEvoy to beat Zenalicious by a neck in the 1500 metre feature as favourite.

The Waller stable now have a decision to make with Foxplay as they consider whether to step up to 2000 metres against fillies in the Group I Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill in a fortnight or stay around the mile trip and possibly take on older mares in the Group I Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) during The Championships.

"I'm not entirely sure which way we will go with her. I asked Chris this morning and he just wanted to get over her last run and put a line through it," said stable representative Charlie Duckworth.

"Showing that brilliant turn of foot, I don't think you need to look at 2000 metres just yet but we'll see."

A $160,000 Magic Millions purchase for Star Thoroughbreds from the Newgate Farm draft, Foxplay runs for a big syndicate of enthusiastic owners and has now won just shy of $500,000 in prizemoney with four wins and three seconds from 11 starts.

Bred by SF Bloodstock, Foxplay is the third winner from three foals to race from imported stakes-winner Butters (USA), a daughter of leading sire El Prado from the family of Group I Breeders Cup Juvenile winner Eliza.
