A stellar second session at the 2015 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on Thursday featured the top three selling mares all consigned by Newgate Farm headed by dual Group I winner Response, who sold for $1.5 million.
The eight year-old daughter of Charge Forward was offered with a positive test to Snitzel and snapped up by leading Japanese breeder Katsumi Yoshida.
“She a glorious mare,” said Arrowfield Stud’s Jon Freyer, who was acting for Yoshida.
“We thought she was an absolute queen.
“She’s in foal to Snitzel and she’s left a couple of beautiful types already. She was exactly what we were after.”
Response was bought as a broodmare prospect off the track by SF Bloodstock in 2012 for $840,000 at the Inglis Broodmare Sale.
Her first foal, a filly by Fastnet Rock, was sold by Newgate Farm at Inglis Easter this year for $1,050,000 to China Horse Club and she has a weanling colt by Exceed and Excel.
Also selling for $1million was Group II winning Redoute’s Choice mare Varenna Miss, who was bought by Emirates Park.
A half-sister to globe-trotting triple Group I winner Criterion, she was offered in foal to Pierro.
“She’s one of the nicest mares we’ve seen for ages,” said Emirates Park’s Trevor Lobb.
“She’s just a lovely mare and she’s in foal to the right horse and we couldn’t be more pleased to get her.
“She had enormous ability and she has a great family – a progressive family – a sister to a champ and that’s what it’s all about.”
Making the trifecta at the top end for Newgate was Group I winner Rostova, offered in foal to Frankel.
Tim Stakemire, bidding on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, was the successful purchaser at $850,000.
“A quality mare,” Stakemire said.
“She proved it on the racetrack and I think she will prove it in the broodmare barn too.
“She’s got a very nice More Than Ready with Gai (Waterhouse) at the moment that is going very well.
“There’s a Frankel to come – that’s a jewel on top isn’t it!”
