Smart New Season Winner for Foxwedge

Thursday, August 3, 2017

Flashy grey Foxwedge three year-old Albumin was an easy winner when resuming from a spell at Hawkesbury on Thursday and owes his colouring to his famous grand-mother Tristanagh, the darling of the 1989 Melbourne Spring Carnival when winning the Thousand Guineas, Wakeful Stakes and VRC Oaks.

The Gerald Ryan trained gelding was a smart winner at Rosehill back in February, which earned him a shot at the Group III ATC The Schweppervescence AT Rosehill on March 25.

Albumin sank like a stone on the heavy track and exhibited a poor post-race recovery, so was sent for a spell, but judging by this performance it won’t be long before he’s back to targeting Black Type.

He was a short priced favourite in the Class One event against older horses over 1100 metres and had little more than a working gallop to beat them by a length and a half.

A $75,000 Inglis Premier purchase for his trainer from the Kornong Station draft, Albumin is a half-brother to Singapore stakes-winner Holy Empire and stakes-placed War Point.

He’s now won two of four starts and over $64,000 and is the sixth winner from six to race from Dushanbe, a Secret Savings (USA) daughter of dual Group I winner Tristanagh.

Albumin looms as a nice spring horse to fly the flag for Foxwedge, the reigning Champion Australian Second Crop Sire.

The Newgate Farm based Group I winner stands at a fee of $22,000.
