The juvenile event at Canterbury on Wednesday featured a strong field of well-bred up and comers with talented Foxwedge gelding Diamonds Are and Snitzel colt Russian Revolution finding the line locked together.
Sent out favourite for the 1100 metre scamper following two recent eye catching trial wins, the Gai Waterhouse trained Diamonds Are showed speed and tenacity to lead and then hold off a determined challenge from Snitzel colt Russian Revolution to win by a head.
Interference over the last 50 metres led to the result being overturned in the steward’s room with victory being awarded to the Peter and Paul Snowden trained Russian Revolution.
A $320,000 Inglis Easter purchase for China Horse Club/ Michael Wallace Bloodstock, Russian Revolution carries the China Horse Club colours and runs for a syndicate that also includes Newgate Farm.
He is the fourth winner from four foals to race from Ballet D’Amour (USA), a Stravinsky half-sister to stakes-winner Taletobetold from the family of Fanfreluche that has also produced champion sires Encosta de Lago and Flying Spur.
Now in the ownership of the Bateman family and residing at Newgate Farm, Ballet D’Amour was covered last spring by Group I VRC Australian Guineas winner Wandjina, so will produce a three-quarter sibling to Russian Revolution this year.
While it would have been nice to have seen Foxwedge post his tenth winner with Diamonds Are, the win of Russian Revolution has had its share of positives with both youngsters looking to have a very bright future!
