The Group II Group II Windsor Park Stud Japan NZ International Trophy (1600m) at Tauranga on Saturday was won by top class Kiwi trained Foxwedge mare Volpe Veloce, who was foaled and raised at Newgate Farm.
She looked all at sea in her most recent start when finishing well back in the Group I Haunui Farm WFA Group One Classic at Otaki on a Slow8 track, but back to the Dead4 surface at Tauranga she showed just what she is capable of in stunning fashion.
Settled well back off a solid speed set by The Mitigator and charged to the line for Michael McNab to win half a length.
Co-trainer Graham Richardson, who prepares the mare along with Gavin Parker, was relieved to see his stable star bounce back to winning form after some frustrations in her last two starts at Group One level.
“She’s a great chaser and everything panned out this time,” Richardson said.
“He (McNab) didn’t panic and to be honest, that’s half the battle as well with her.
“It was a good effort and I’m just chuffed for her and all the owners.”
Richardson also confirmed that Volpe Veloce would now have another tilt at Group I level in the Fiber Fresh New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) at Te Aroha on April 6.
A $240,000 Karaka yearling purchase from the Lyndhurst Farm draft, Volpe Veloce has won 12 of 24 starts and was a successful pinhook for Lyndhurst having been bought for $120,000 at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale from the Newgate Farm draft.
Bred by Nick and Amy Vass, she was foaled and raised at Newgate Farm and is a half-sister to stakes-winner Delago Bolt from Group III winner Bardego.
