Promising young Newgate sires Wandjina and Deep Field both posted winners on Saturday, while Deep Field’s promising three year-old Hurricane Hawker resumed from a spell to run a gallant third in the Listed MVRC McKenzie Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Winner of the $200,000 Magic Millions Clockwise Classic last November and third in the Group III MRC Blue Diamond Prelude, the Mike Moroney trained Hawker Hurricane was gelded during his winter break and returned on Saturday.
He raced on the pace and finished third to Condo’s Express, but will no doubt take great benefit from the run and is entered for the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas.
Deep Field also sired his sixth winner of the new season when Galaxial scored at Nowra on Sunday for the Freedman stable at her second start. She becomes his 26th first crop winner.
Wandjina tasted success with the Lindsay Park trained filly Grand Diamond, who made it two wins from two starts when scoring at Pakenham.
A $20,000 purchase from the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale from the Watson Bloodstock draft, Grand Diamond is the first winner for Grand Excess, a half-sister by Exceed and Excel to Group III winner Stand Tall and stakes-winner Seul Amour.
Grand Excess is from Champion 3YO Filly Grand Archway, who won both the VRC Oaks and Australian Oaks among her four Group I victories, so Grand Diamond may well appreciate a little further than the 1100 metres of this win and is entered for the Group I MRC Thousand Guineas.
