After exploding on the scene with an eight and a quarter length romp over 1050 metres at Morphettville in January, the Phillip Stokes-trained Sizzlefly will be given her chance at the Melbourne spring carnival after she kept her record perfect with a dominant performance over 1000 metres at Mornington on Monday.
Given a confident ride by stable apprentice Kayla Crowther, Sizzlefly was given plenty of time to find her feet early, before Crowther got her in the running line, three deep with cover and it was a matter of how far in the straight.
Revelling in the heavy conditions, the 2-year-old daughter of Sizzling strode clear to win by two and a quarter lengths.
“She’s shown us plenty at home, she’s been working with our better horses and never lost a track gallop,” Stokes said.
“We thought the sot track would be okay as she’d been working in recent weeks on the Pakenham track at times it has been soft.
“I think she’s a really nice filly that should measure up to spring races.
“We’ll see how she pulls up, there’s no rush. We’ll graduate to a Saturday meeting next.”
Purchased by her trainer for $110,000 out of the Aquis Farm draft at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Sizzlefly is one of three winners from four to race out of More Than Ready’s stakes-winning daughter Come Fly With Me, a half-sister to stakes-placed Maritess, the dam of the Group III SAJC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner and 1.4 million earner Flying Jess.
