A maiden going into the $250,000 Group III ATC Reginald Allen Quality (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday, Flying Artie filly Beyond the Reef emerged from the race a stakes-winner for Tricolours Racing.
Trained by John Sargent, Beyond the Reef had shown talent with placings at her first three starts, two of them this preparation and enjoyed the step up in trip and a patient ride from Dylan Gibbons to post her first win.
Last turning for home, she was the widest runner coming into the straight and let loose with a barnstorming finish to round up her rivals and win by a length running away.
“I used to train the mother for (winning syndicators) Tricolours, Miss Moana. She won a few races at Randwick and was second in a South Australian Fillies Classic.,” said John Sargent.
“This filly has always shown a bit, but today was a bit of a throw at the stumps. It’s a Group race, your home track. She’d been hitting the line strongly at the provincials, so it was worth a go.
“It was a great finish because they didn’t go all that hard, but she hit it strong and she’ll be better over more ground, but I won’t overtax her.
“She’s quite a slight filly. There’s not a lot of her so whether we give her a break and have a go in the autumn might be better. I’ll speak to the owners. At least she has shown good ability.”
Bred by Newgate in partnership with Tricolours Racing Syndications, Beyond the Reef was foaled and raised at Newgate and is the first foal of Group III placed Miss Moana, who was purchased as a yearling by Tricolours Racing Syndications for $50,000 at Karaka Book 1 back in 2017.
Miss Moana was more than handy on the track earning nearly $200,000 and she has a quality pedigree being a half-sister by Uncle Mo (USA) to stakes-winner Stay Focused and three more stakes performers tracing back to Irish Oaks winner Knight’s Baroness.
Miss Moana has a 2YO colt by Artorius that was sold for $50,000 at MM Adelaide earlier this year and she has a yearling filly to follow by Cosmic Force, but no foal this spring after missing last year.
