There was a short priced favourite in the 3YO fillies maiden at Kyneton on Tuesday, but she will have to wait for another day to break the ice after being run down by a talented first starter by Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside.
The Waterhouse Bott trained filly Better By Far was looking to cast off maiden status after running second at three previous runs, two of those in good class metro races in Sydney.
She led and set the pace, but stalking her all the way was the Grahame Begg trained Unwavering, who slid across from an outside gate to sit just outside the leader.
When Jordan Childs asked Unwavering to find the line, she surged past the favourite to win the 1100m contest in good style by a length and a half.
“She’s a lovely filly and the owners have been really patient,” said stable representative Tom Lane.
“Jordy gave her a great ride and used the favourite to come across and she was too strong late.”
Unwavering was a a $100,000 Magic Millions purchase for SGS Bloodstock from Newhaven Park and they retain a share in her ownership.
Unwavering is the third winner from three foals to race from South of France (USA), a stakes-winning half-sister by Quality Road to Group II winner Nothing Like You.
Unwavering is the eighth winner of the new season for Stay Inside, who stands at Newgate at a fee of $66,000.
