The loss of our now pensioned sire Deep Field was again highlighted on Saturday at Eagle Farm where talented three year-old gelding Depth of Character scored a commanding win in the Group II BRC Queensland Guineas (1600m).
The Annabel and Rob Archibald trained three-year-old was let find his feet from the barriers under Noel Callow, settling midfield, but was travelling so sweetly he’d moved to within the leaders under his own steam into the straight and it wasn’t until the 200m mark that Callow asked for an effort.
From there it was done and dusted as he powered clear to win by a couple of lengths and is now a two time stakes-winner.
“I actually thought he might be a little bit shorter in the market just with his Sydney form,” said Annabel Neasham.
“You know two starts back he was very good behind Evaporate and Swift Falcon, and you know he was still pretty good in the Guineas as well but just not quite as good as the Broadsidings of the world.”
Depth of Character was a $180,000 purchase for his trainer from The Chase draft at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and has the overall record of four wins and three placings from 12 starts with prizemoney topping $565,000.
Bred by China Horse Club, Depth Of Character is the second winner from as many foals for the Group III placed Power (GB) mare Caricature, who produced a colt by Russian Revolution last spring.
Depth of Character has plenty of depth of pedigree as his dam is a half-sister to Group II winner Pussy Willow and stakes-winners Inside Agent and Pussy O’Reilly, the dam of Group III winner Positivity.
