Newgate Farm’s classy young sire Foxwedge was in hot form on Saturday with unbeaten three year-old filly Volpe Veloce taking the Group III Eulogy Stakes at Awapuni in New Zealand, while the Aquis Farm owned two year-old filly Colosimo remained unbeaten at Eagle Farm after posting her second win from as many starts.
Volpe Veloce made it five wins from five starts when she showed a mile held no fears for her when scoring a decisive victory.
“I was a little bit worried half-way up the straight, she looked a bit flat-footed before she really wound up,” trainer Graham Richardson said.
“That might be a good sign that she could possibly get to a mile and a half.”
Volpe Veloce was given the perfect run one out and one back by Johnathan Parkes and once she hit top gear in the run home she drew out to win by a length and a half.
Richardson said he would monitor the filly in the coming days before deciding on her next start.
“I’m undecided at the moment. There’s the Eight Carat at Ellerslie or we could go to Trentham for the Levin Classic, it will be one of those two races.”
A $240,000 Karaka yearling purchase from the Lyndhurst Farm draft, Volpe Veloce was a successful pinhook for Lyndhurst having been bought for $120,000 at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale from the Newgate Farm draft.
Bred by Nick and Amy Vass, she was foaled and raised at Newgate Farm and is a half-sister to stakes-winner Delago Bolt and is the fourth winner from Group III winner Bardego, who was on-sold last year for $46,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale with Randwick Bloodstock the buyer for Rushton Park.
A Foxwedge colt from Bardego fetched $150,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale this year and Rushton Park will offer the current yearling from Bardego, a full sister to Volpe Veloce at the 2017 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale as Lot 365.
The Steven O’Dea trained Foxwedge filly Colosimo was sent out favourite for the open juvenile event over 1200 metres at Eagle Farm and emerged triumphant in scoring by the best part of a length.
Colosimo is Magic Millions bound having been plucked from the Rosari Farm draft from the 2016 Magic Millions Yearling Sale by Aquis Farm for $55,000.
Bred by Ged and Jan Nolan of Rosari Farm, Colosimo is the third winner for Take Charge, a winning half-sister by Dehere (USA) to stakes-winner Mutate.
Rosari Farm are no strangers to Magic Millions success having bred and sold Mirror Mirror, who won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2006 and was making news on Saturday as the dam of MM sale-topper and debut winner Chauffeur.
A brilliant Group I winning son of Fastnet Rock that blossomed at three, Foxwedge has taken giant strides this season as his own progeny have turned three.
He is now the sire of nine individual stakes horses in both hemispheres headed by his Group winning fillies Foxplay, Kentucky Miss and now Volpe Veloce.
Foxwedge has 27 yearlings entered for Magic Millions and 17 for Inglis Classic.
