The Newgate/ China Horse Club Partners have had a busy week purchasing a fresh selection of talented colts from Inglis Easter and the well-known colours were in the winner’s circle at Randwick on Saturday when Snitzel colt Campione D’Italia won the $1million Group I ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
Trained by Chris Waller, Campione D’Italia broke his maiden winning the Group II ATC Skyline Stakes and was then a fast finishing fourth in the Group I ATC Golden Slipper behind Guest House.
He bounced out of that run and presented in great order in the mounting yard on Saturday and duly produced a career best performance to win.
Given a quiet ride early by James McDonald, he powered to the line to win by three-quarters of a length and has now banked just shy of $1million in prizemoney.
“Today was his fourth career star and each run has got a little bit better, a little bit better,” said Chris Walleer.
“His run in the Golden Slipper was amazing. He just got too far back. It was no-one’s fault, and the horse is just learning all the time.
“He got a lovely draw today, and that was the difference between having him in the firing line or going back like he was last start. It was good to see him knuckle down and get the job done.”
“He’s got raw talent. His first start he did everything wrong, just because he thought, right let’s get the race over and done with. We had to harness that a little bit and bring him back. He’s a lovely colt.”
Campione D’Italia was a $500,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Baramul Stud draft and is a sibling to Group placed Flashing Steel and Snitzel Miss being the best of four winners from Medaglia Valore.
A winning Medaglia D’Oro (USA) mare from Group II winner Military Rose, Campione D’Italia comes from a prolific Black Type family tracing to blue hen Summoned.
