The $100,000 super maidens have been a great innovation by Racing NSW and at Randwick on Wednesday Brutal 3YO Adenauer claimed the prize and his co-trainer Michael Hawkes believes better wins are in store.
Bred and retained to race by the Pethybridge family, Adenauer was having just his third race start and second this prep and appreciated getting out to 1400m.
The leader Artgirl gave a good kick turning for home, but Adenauer charged late with a well timed run for Tyler Schiller to win by a long head.
“He jumped, he travelled well. Coming around the corner. I wasn’t too worried because I know Tyler had a lap full of horse, but when he actually got out and balanced up, the horse sprinted really well and just showed the ability that he has got,” said Michael Hawkes.
“He’s not the finished product yet and he’s got a lot more to give. I’ve got a lot of time for this horse and as I said before, pre-race, the Brutal’s are going somewhere and this bloke, I think he’s going to be a beautiful Saturday grade horse.”
Adenauer is the first foal from Ayemgee, a placed Deep Field mare that traces back to top producer Professionelle, the dam of Group winners Sportsman, Prisoner of Love, Hoystar and stakes-winner King of Prussia.
Adenauer is the 57th winner this season for Newgate Farm’s Group I Doncaster Mile winning sire Brutal, who is fourth in the leading third crop sires list by winners and is also in the Top 10 for earnings.
His winners include Group II WA Derby winner Sentimental Legend and stakes-winner Harlem Queen along with Group placed filly Bird Whistle.
Brutal is priced at $16,500 this spring.
