The $200,000 Listed Woodlands Stakes (1100m) Scone on Saturday featured a big field of beautifully bred fillies all chasing their first Black Type and at the winning post it was 150-1 shot Queen Regent that took the prize.
Trained by Blake Ryan, Queen Regent faded to run fourth after leading on debut at Hawkesbury last month over 1000m in a maiden event, but was given a very different ride this time around.
Jay Ford rode her again, but took a conservative approach and was able to find good cover for the daughter of Wild Ruler in the run and she settled nicely midfield. When angled into clear running, she produced a brilliant change of gear to zoom clear.
Queen Regent won by more than a length over Found the Gold (Too Darn Hot (GB) and Lady Catalina (Written Tycoon), who both had winning form.
Who found QUEEN REGENT!?!?!

“We got it all wrong first-up at Hawkesbury,” Ryan said.
“She trialled terrific and going into her maiden I thought she would just about win but she went too hard.
“But I still ride her work and she has always shown really good ability so I knew she would go better today.
“I told Jay whatever you do just find cover. Sometimes if you take them into a better race, they run it quicker with a bigger field so they have no option but to get cover.
“She switched off really good for Jay and that gave her the chance to show her acceleration she got into the clear.”
A $40,000 Inglis HTBA Yearling purchase from the Glenbeigh Farm draft for her trainer, Queen Regent was then put through the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale where she attracted little interest and was bought back for $30,000.
Queen Regent has now won over $110,000 in her first two starts and is the first winner from Group III placed Foxwedge mare Miss Vixen, a half-sister to Group III placed Veranskova f rom stakes-winner Kirvinsky.
Miss Vixen has been a regular visitor to Newgate and has a weanling colt by State of Rest (IRE) and was covered last spring by Artorius.
Queen Regent is the second stakes-winner for Snitzel’s Group I winning son Wild Ruler, who made it a winning double on the day when the talented filly Pinkish Hue won on debut at Toowoomba over 1000m.
Queen Regent and Pinkish Hue are the fifth and sixth winners for Wild Ruler, who stands at Newgate at a fee of $27,500 this spring.
