Tiger of Malay is building momentum at stud, with the young son of Extreme Choice set to be represented by a promising group of first-crop three-year-olds targeting feature races across Australia this spring and summer.
Despite beginning his stud career from relatively humble beginnings, Tiger of Malay has already produced a number of progressive metropolitan and stakes performers, with Obambulate, Forest King, Apex Predator and Momentslikethese giving him opportunities to enhance his profile across four states in the coming months.
Obambulate, trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, is out of an Encosta de Lago mare and has won two of his first three starts, including his latest Saturday metropolitan victory at Caulfield. He is set to resume in the Listed McKenzie Stakes in early September, with the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas an aspirational target should he continue to progress.
Forest King, trained by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton, is out of a Monashee Mountain mare and has won two of his four starts. He returned with a Benchmark victory at Gosford as a short-priced favourite and has the Group 1 Golden Rose as an aspirational spring goal. Black-type races including the Up And Coming Stakes, San Domenico Stakes and Run To The Rose are being considered as potential stepping stones.
In Queensland, the Matt Hoysted-trained Apex Predator is unbeaten in two metropolitan starts in Brisbane. Out of a Singspiel mare, the progressive filly has displayed considerable natural speed and is expected to return during the summer, working through her grades with black-type company firmly within reach if she continues to improve.
Tasmanian filly Momentslikethese has already twice been stakes placed, finishing runner-up to Aristopolos in both the Elwick Stakes and Gold Sovereign Stakes. Trained by Stuart Gandy and out of a Redoute’s Choice mare, she is expected to appreciate further distance as a three-year-old and will return for a summer campaign aimed towards the Tasmanian 1000 Guineas and Oaks.
These early performers also provide breeders with useful pedigree information when considering future matings with Tiger of Malay. His leading first-crop runners include progeny from mares by Encosta de Lago (by Fairy King, by Northern Dancer), Monashee Mountain (by Danzig, by Northern Dancer), Singspiel (by In The Wings, by Sadler’s Wells) and Redoute’s Choice (by Danehill, by Danzig).
The results are particularly encouraging given the platform from which Tiger of Malay began his stud career. He covered 161 mares in his first season and another 131 in his second, meaning there is considerable representation still to come through behind his current three-year-olds.
A Group 2-winning and Group 1-placed son of Extreme Choice, Tiger of Malay is out of the More Than Ready mare Sambar. He won the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes as a two-year-old before returning at three to win the Group 3 Up And Coming Handicap, while his juvenile campaign also included a third placing in the Group 1 JJ Atkins.
Importantly for breeders, Tiger of Malay remains highly accessible this season. He stands at Newgate Farm at an advertised fee of $11,000 + GST in 2026, providing breeders with an accessible opportunity to use a Group-winning son of Extreme Choice whose first runners are already performing at metropolitan and stakes level.
With promising three-year-olds heading towards feature races around Australia and two sizeable crops following behind them, Tiger of Malay is a stallion breeders can support with increasing confidence in 2026.
