A competitive juvenile race at Doomben on Wednesday delivered an impressive debut win for the Michael Freedman trained Extreme Choice colt Berzelius.
Sent north after three previous trials, two of them this preparation, Berzelius was given time to find his feet by Ange Jones and despite being pushed wide on the turn when starting to improve, the colt finished with a wet sail.
Green to the task, he needed some encouragement, but when Berzelius hit top gear it was game over.
He surged clear late to win the 1110m dash by a length and a half and was eased down late.

The Brisbane Winter Carnival will offer a myriad of options for Berzelius to step up in grade to Black Type company over the next few months.
Berzelius was a $340,000 Magic Millions purchase for Michael Freedman Racing/Michael Wallace/Kia Ora Stud from the draft of Newgate Farm, who retain a share in his ownership.
Berzelius is a half-brother to Group III placed Styling City and is the sixth winner from seven foals to race from stakes-winning Artie Schiller (USA) mare Secret Liaison, who produced a colt last spring by In The Congo, another of the young Newgate sires.
