The Newgate Consignment was the leading vendor at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale selling 44 mares for $18,275,000.
Newgate sold three of the top four lots on Wednesday with Miss Hellfire topping the session at $2.05million.
A mare in foal to Extreme Choice is a valuable commodity and particularly a well related Group II placed mare like Miss Hellfire in her first season at stud with Sheng Geng, China the registered buyer.
Miss Hellfire is no stranger to the Gold Coast sale ring as the Hellbent filly from Peace Time (USA) was sold in the Newgate draft as a yearling back in 2021 to Triple Crown Syndications for just $60,000.
They enjoyed great success with Miss Hellfire, who won over $650,000 in prizemoney before being sold as a broodmare prospect at this sale last year for $640,000 to Newgate Bloodstock.
Miss Hellfire has a big pedigree as she is a half-sister to Group placed Caracaro and August Bloom as well as ill-fated stakes-winner Xtremetime, who was by Extreme Choice. So the result of her current mating will be a three-quarter sibling to Xtremetime, who showed immense talent and had only four race starts before a premature death.
Newgate Farm’s Jim Carey was thrilled with the result.
“We are a commercial farm, we have to pay the bills, so it was a great result for the lads on the farm,” he said.
“She’s a special mare for us. We bred her – she had the ‘N’ on her shoulder – and we bought her back last year.
“She was a hugely talented mare, she was a beautiful yearling, we know the family well and her sister’s (August Bloom) in-foal to Extreme (Choice).
“She hasn’t turned a hair, she’s very straight-forward. She was an elite offering. The sire’s a freak, so if she throws one that looks like herself, she’s a winner.”
Newgate sold a yearling three-quarter -sister by I Am Invincible to Miss Hellfire at Inglis Easter this year for $800,000 to Yarradale Stud and Peace Time (USA) has another filly to follow by I Am Invincible.
Newgate offered three mares in foal to Extreme Choice and while Complicit (USA) passed in shy of her $800,000 reserve, Amen Corner was sold to Sheng Geng for $1.3million.
A placed I Am Invincible mare from Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Augusta Proud, Amen Corner is also a half-sister to Group III winner Thyme for Roses, who went to stud in North America and is the dam of Group II winner Zeitlos.
With good looks and pedigree, Amen Corner is already on her way at stud producing her first living foal last spring, a colt by Extreme Choice.
“She’s a good, strong mare and if she leaves one similar to herself it will be a very popular yearling,” said Yulong’s Sam Fairgray, who indicated the resulting progeny of both Amen Corner and Miss Hellfire may be sold in the future.
“At this stage they will come through as yearlings. Once the foals are born we’ll assess and see what we do, but at this stage I think we’ll try and offer them back into the marketplace.”
Extreme Choice has already given Yulong a big payday as they purchased his Group I MRC Blue Diamond winning son Devil Night at Magic Millions for $1.4million and he will star on the NSW roster this spring.
Securing mares in foal to the stallion is obviously a Yulong strategy as they bought two at this sale following on from the Inglis Chairman’s Sale where they paid $1,050,000 for Hazlebrook.
“They’re rare commodities. He’s obviously a great stallion and his sire sons at stud have started really well, so it makes sense to get as many of them as you possibly can,” said Sam Fairgray.
“We have had the success (with Extreme Choice), we’ve got Devil Night going to stud and we’ve got a couple of two-year-olds and yearlings by him, so hopefully we can get another Group 1 winning son of his to come through.”
